Secrets Bar - Sheepshead Bay
Ave. Z & E. 14th St.
Someone finally got it right and created a local gay bar that doesn’t try to
be Crash; it is first and foremost a local bar. Even its unassuming façade
offers only a small gay flag sticker to let you know you’ve arrived at the right
place. The pool table, Joker Poker games, and football schedules hanging
around put you in mind of every neighborhood bar you partied in while still
in the closet. But make no mistake, this is a gay bar; why else would there
be homoerotic art and ceramic theater masks decorating the walls?
The crowd is as eclectic as a local crowd can be: some nights women
dominate, some nights men. The age of the crowd varies also, anywhere
from the twenty-something to the something else gather and share a
karaoke mic. Staffed with bartenders who seem to innately know that
tending bar is more than pouring shots into a glass of ice, they strive to
make their bar a party where everyone is invited.
Excelsior Park Slope
390 Fifth Ave (Sixth St)
718-832-1599
Park Slope staple, Excelsior, is a handsome bar; It’s linear design, and soft
lighting portray a sense of comfort and decorum. There is a back porch that
is both convenient for those who like to smoke without advertising on the
avenue, and those who like to unravel in the balmy evening breezes.
Generous drinks, and an eclectic choice of house wines make this a little bit
of the village in olde Park Slope.
Open seven days a week. Happy Hour: 6-8pm Mon-Fri; 2-7pm Sat-Sun.
Thurs: Women’s Night.
